What To Expect at Your First Riding Lesson

Arrival & Check-In

Arrive about 10-15 minutes before your scheduled lesson to check in, sign any required waivers, get fitted for a helmet (if you need one), and get settled.

Introduction & Safety Orientation

Your instructor will give you a quick orientation to the facility and briefly explain barn safety rules such as how to stand around horses, where to walk, etc.

Grooming & Tack

You will learn how to groom and prepare the horse for riding by brushing the coat, picking out hooves, and applying tack (saddle and bridle). You will also learn how to remove the tack and cool down your horse afterward.

Your First Ride

Your first lesson will focus on basics like getting comfortable in the saddle, learning proper posture, steering, stopping, and walking.

What To Wear

Essential Clothing

Long pants — Riding breeches, leggings, or comfortably fitted pants are best. Denim is acceptable for Western but might rub on English saddles.

Helmet — A certified riding helmet is required. We provide helmets if you do not have your own.

Boot or Closed-Toe Shoes with a Small Heel — A small heel (about 1”) helps keep your foot from slipping through the stirrup. Good options are paddock boots or sturdy shoes/boots.

Dress appropriately for weather — Lightweight layers are great so you can adjust if it’s hot or cold.

Hair Tied Back — If you long hair, keep it tied down in a low ponytail or braid so your helmet fits correctly and comfortably.
